  • Record heat in California - how are your plants holding up?

Record heat in California - how are your plants holding up? We've lost a few but always look forward to new plants in the fall and spring.  Our sumac trees [2 in front] are suffering and we gave them some extra water last night and finally got out and have been doing some weeding and general yard work in the evenings.

We're looking to the sky for rain  and if anyone has a special drought/hot weather tips they would like it share, it would be much appreciated.

  • CaliforniaGardeners.net design and philosophy

CaliforniaGardeners.net is a highly focused website designed to serve the California gardening communities. Many web sites try to be everything to everyone. Although people everywhere are interesting, you reach a point when it's time to come home where it feels the best anyway.

CaliforniaGardeners.net is designed to provide you with information in your own community. Internet searches for products and information are boundless, and there are times when it's best to buy through the big eCommerce shops and through mail-order.

CalforniaGardeners.net is designed to bring these three groups together in your area:

    1. Experienced, semi-professional gardeners - those that have expertise and knowledge they would like to share with others. This group would include master gardeners, garden club members etc.

    2. Casual gardeners - home gardening, the weekend gardeners

    3. Gardening Businesses - professionals, business owners, nurseries, landscaping companies etc.

When it's time to do research, buy products and services, or find local information wouldn't you?

Like to know about gardeners in your local area and state

Get advice from and buy from your local nurseries

Like to hear about business specials in your area

Like to know about events in your area

Like to buy, sell and trade with people in your area and have a cup of coffee with them

See pictures of gardens you can actually go to and talk with the people

Find a landscaping company in your area recommended by your neighbors

Find a yard maintenance company with a great reputation

These are examples of why CaliforniaGardeners.net was created, to assist you in these areas at home, locally. We'll also give you the other tools you need including plant databases, glossaries and other information. Tell us what you need and we'll try to fulfill it!

  • CaliforniaGardeners.net looking for writers and contributors

Interested in writing articles and weblogs? CaliforniaGardeners.net is interested too! We're looking for a variety of writers: members that would like to write instructional, informative content and also writers that would simply like to share their gardening experiences through stories. We're looking for fun and joy related our incredible earth:  plants, pictures, poems and song.

Interested? Become a member and send a private message to Utah Jones, Dave, the developer of CaliforniaGardeners.net

There's so many great things we can start to do here. I'm constantly looking for new and enhanced content management features and informational resources. The Wikipedia features were recently tested. In addition we would like to add a variety of new features if the member base supports it: the email module for subscriptions, possibly a new wiki so we can begin to develop our own, California specific content. Other ideas are chat capabilities, glossary etc. Please send us your ideas.

The platform we're using is powerful and is based on Community Server. We've got industrial strength capabilities "under the hood" here. The sky is the limit. Microsoft uses Community Server for a variety of community collaboration sites for their own company.

  • New Wikipedia feature being tested

A new Wikipedia feature is being tested that allows links for information, e.g. plant names, botanical terminology to the Wikipedia online encyclopedia. You add the link directly to your post.

When the post is read the topic is highlighted with a mouse over question mark in yellow and you can click on the link to display a summary of information [if available] from Wikipedia in a drop-down list. The list also includes a link for full description directly to Wikipedia.

The feature is currently under test and more information will be posted when it becomes available.

  • New photo gallery and blogging skins are being tested

New photo gallery and blogging skins [interface] are being tested for CaliforniaGardeners.net so that members can personalize their content. I'm running through test cases to make sure that all the functionality of the skins is present. Will keep you posted and let you know when they become available. Thanks!
  • Achieve community recogntion by acquring MVP gold member status

CaliforniaGardeners.net offers both businesses and individuals the ability to achieve community recogntion by acquring MVP gold member status through content contributions.

The community is designed to be a platform to provide great content and expertise in gardening knowledge based on the premise that community members are here to share common interests. Every time a member helps someone, makes a post, and answers questions, that member builds recognition with a highly targeted audience.

The weblogs are designed to be informative and instructive. Great examples of the use of the weblog would be to post consecutive articles about an instructional procedure, for instance, the steps involved in installing an irrigation system, new landscaping, a new lawn etc. Other examples would be articles on horticultural studies.

CaliforniaGardeners.net is also looking for contributors with "colorful" personalities to add fun to the day. There are rumors around of various experts, both north and south, "plant people," that can also sing a song and write poetry! We would welcome people that would like to get involved that can add some humor and fun to our site.
